Joker Comics v1 #1, 1942 - Among a collection of forgettable characters like Eustis Hayseed and Winnie the Weasel, this humor-themed first issue introduces the punch-packing Powerhouse Pepper. Impressed by a display of his strength, a sleazy promoter books PP to fight deadweight champion Kid Skullcracker. Created and drawn by Basil Wolverton, the short story benefits from his precise, textural drawing style. The dim-witted but good-hearted Pepper would continue to appear in Joker Comics, Gay Comics and Tessie the Typist, as well as his own self-titled series. Other artists in this issue include Al Fagaly and Gar Dean. /// key 1st appearance Powerhouse Pepper, 1st issue- - - - - - - - - -
