Smash Comics v1 #14, 1940 - As part of the crew of a high altitude balloon experiment, reporter Happy Terrill is suddenly changed by unknown cosmic forces. He emerges with the ability to travel among shafts of light. When capturing a band of thieves, he employs magnetic powers and possibly invulnerability. Interestingly, this origin suggests the Ray isn't Terrill in costume but a new being with his likeness. This Will Eisner story was drawn by Lou Fine.
