More Fun Comics v1 #52, 1940 - When Detective Jim Corrigan constantly disrupts "Gat" Benson's criminal operations, the mobster kidnaps him and his girlfriend en route to their engagement party. In grisly fashion, the detective's body is put in a barrel and dumped off a pier. Unbelievably, he returns to life as a spectral avenger. Like other golden age heroes, the character only appears in costume on the cover and the story's opening panel. Jim Corrigan officially dons the costume in next issue's conclusion. This story, written by Jerry Siegel and drawn by Bernard Baily, was later reprinted in Secret Origins v2 #5. The Spectre would have his own self-titled series during the silver age. This issue also includes art by Paul Lauretta and George Papp. Cover by Baily. /// key 1st appearance, 1st origin, 1st cover Jim Corrigan as the Spectre
