Showcase v1 #22, 1959 - Housed in a flight simulator, pilot Hal Jordan is suddenly transported to the site of a crashed spaceship. A dying alien named Abin Sur designates the Earthman as the next protector of this space sector. Endowed with strange new powers and a lantern-shaped charging device, Jordan commits to fighting evil. This issue marks the first appearance of the silver age Green Lantern. His origin, written by John Broome and drawn by Gil Kane and Joe Giella, was later reprinted in Secret Origins #1, Secret Origins v2 #2 and Secret Origins of the Super DC Heroes. Cover by Kane. Green Lantern would soon debut his own self-titled series in 1960.
