Fantastic Four #5 - Jack Kirby art & cover + 1st Dr. Doom

Jack Kirby
Fantastic Four v1 #5, 1962 - Doctor Doom kidnaps Sue Storm and forces her teammates to bring pirate treasure from the distant past. Jack Kirby's cover focuses on the new villain, but has an oddly static quality. His story art, however, fares better than previous issues. Large, roomy panels herald the beginning of each chapter. The drawings are noticeably more dynamic and engaging (see interior page below). Joe Sinnott's inks soften some of the harsher edges, but don't detract from the overall artwork. Doctor Doom encounters the FF in the first of many battles. This Stan Lee story was later reprinted in Fantastic Four annual #2. This is 5 of 116 Fantastic Four issues by Kirby. /// key 1st appearance, 1st cover Doctor Doom
