X-Men v1 #9, 1965 - In pursuit of their foe Lucifer, the X-men travel to Europe and encounter an unexpected obstacle: the mighty Avengers. In this first meeting of the two super-teams, Jack Kirby draws the multitude of characters with confident ease. The opening splash and a large battle panel (see interior page below) both display a mastery of layout and sequencing. While a tad crowded, Kirby's cover artfully conveys the story's contents while employing a split screen. This silver age story was later reprinted in X-Men special #1. This is 9 of 17 X-men issues by Kirby.
