Amazing Spider-man v1 #113, 1973 - While suffering from an unknown illness, Peter Parker also must contend with the return of Doctor Octopus. Along with Tony Mortellaro, Jim Starlin is credited with assisting series artist John Romita. Assuming he did part of the inking, the artist's hand is nowhere to be seen. His first professional work in comics, Starlin seems to have ceded to the Marvel "house style" rather than making his own presence felt. Regardless, the results are more than a little disappointing. I don't know why it should be considered "Disappointing" when the three issues are probably the finest Spider-Man Comics to be produced. Although not immediately noticeably after Romita's inks, I believe some of the penciling can be accredited to Starlin. A sketch he produced at the time is very similar to a whole page spread used in issue 114. And many of the character poses used are similar to Starlin's as opposed to Romita's.
Most artists' early works suffer by comparison to their later works. In Starlin's defense, this was an "assist" as opposed to a full-on assignment. Compared to his Captain Marvel and Warlock a few years later, this issue is a disappointment. I appreciate your viewpoint though. I'm curious what you think of my Top 10 Starlin list.
