Adventures of the Fly v1 #1, 1959 - The publishers of Archie comics dive into the super-hero genre with the first appearance and origin of the
Fly. Joe Simon and
Jack Kirby introduce a teenager suddenly endowed with insect-like powers (sound familiar?). The art is overall competent, but not exceptional. Simon's style is also more assertive than usual in many of the faces. The villain "Spider" Spry, making his first appearance in the second story, is a prototypical Kirby antagonist with his grotesque features. The issue's high point is the self-touted "wide angle scream": basically a two page horizontal panel intended to simulate a movie theater effect. "The Strange New World of the Fly" and "Come Into My Parlor" were later reprinted in
Blue Ribbon Comics v3 #1. This is 1 of 2
