Jack Kirby
New Gods v1 #9, 1972 - In the aftermath of battle, Lightray and Orion convalesce on Earth. Meanwhile, hidden underground on New Genesis, the powerful Mantis builds up his forces for an impending strike. Jack Kirby introduces Bug, a resident from the humanoid insect colony intent on warning the New Gods. Wildly entertaining, the artwork boasts an action-packed spread (pages 2-3) and three splashes. In a scene where Orion rants at his enemies, Kirby cleverly uses the hero's own shadow to convey his tortured state of mind (page 15 panel 1). This story was later reprinted in New Gods v2 #5. Also in this book: a classic Manhunter tale reprinted from Adventure Comics #78. This is 9 of 11 New Gods issues by Kirby. /// key 1st appearance, 1st cover Bug / Kirby gallery
