New Gods v1 #8 dc bronze age comic book cover art by Jack Kirby
Jack Kirby
New Gods v1 #8, 1972 - Kaliban the Cruel heaps destruction upon the city, hoping to lure Orion in a fight to the death. One dedicated police officer confronts the super-villain, putting his life on the line. Jack Kirby's cover is a bit cramped for my taste, lacking a clear focus point on a single character. Regardless, the artist continues his impressive run with the aid of inker Mike Royer. The ensuing fight between Orion and Kaliban is drawn with a ferocity few others could match. Perhaps most memorable, though, is Kirby's splash page of the New Gods' arrival (page 6) and their quiet observation of a young couple. This story was later reprinted in New Gods v2 #4. Like previous issues, the book ends with a back-up tale (Tales of the Young Gods) and a golden age reprint (Manhunter from Adventure Comics #77). This is 8 of 11 New Gods issues by Kirby. /// Kirby gallery
