Donald Duck FC #29 |
(Walt Disney's) Donald Duck v1 / Four Color v2 #29, 1943 - Donald and his nephews discover a mummy's ring, setting the stage for a mystery that takes them on an exotic adventure. Like his previous effort,
Carl Barks' artwork is spare in detail. His best scenes occur in Egypt, where decorative flourishes abound (see interior page below). Settings and landmarks appear to be referenced from National Geographic, bringing an uncommon authenticity to the genre. Much lesser known are the two remaining stories, one about an organ grinder's monkey and another about a horse race called the Screwball Derby. Both are drawn by Barks, who continues to hone his storytelling skills. "Donald Duck and the Mummy's Ring" was later reprinted in
Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck #1,
Walt Disney Comics Digest #44 and
Donald Duck Adventures #14. This is 2 of 43
Donald Duck issues by
Barks.
