What If (the original Marvel bullpen had become the Fantastic Four?) v1 #11, 1978 - Jack Kirby writes and draws one of his oddest stories of the bronze age. This super-hero parody features himself and Marvel employees Stan Lee, Sol Brodsky and Flo Steinberg. This whimsical tale transforms them into the Fantastic Four while retaining their own personalities and idiosyncrasies. Despite the humorous tone, Kirby utilizes his trademark bold two-page spread, accompanied by a nicely detailed single splash (see interior page below). Some pages are better drawn than others, but meets expectations overall. Though more relevant to industry insiders and diehard Marvel fans, this issue offers a knowing glimpse into the people behind the scenes.
