New Gods v1 #1, 1971 - With this title, Jack Kirby begins his ambitious Fourth World saga for DC. Orion, Lightray, Highfather and Metron make their first appearances as the New Gods. Readers get their first glimpse of the peaceful idyllic world of New Genesis and its evil counterpart Apokolips. Kirby combines mythology and technology in this saga of two opposing forces. His artwork is bold and enthusiastic, despite another artist's mediocre inking. Four full splash pages and other scenes show the artist's renewed vigor for the medium. Kalibak the Cruel makes his debut, wielding his powerful Beta Club. This story was later reprinted in New Gods v2 #1. Kirby gallery

New Gods #1 was the best issue in terms of powerful Kirby artwork. The illustration quality seemed to drop off after the first few issues, showing the jarring difference between Vince Colletta and Mike Royer who seemed to blob on the ink.
Colletta A+ inks.
