Captain America v1 #252, 1980 - Mr. Hyde and Batroc threaten to ram an explosive tanker into Manhattan, unless their ransom is met and Captain America is handed over to them. The vantage point of John Byrne's cover seems far away, yet the visuals effectively tell the story. The opening splash, showing Cap chained to the tanker's bow, is distinctive and compelling. The scale and composition seem to heighten the drama. Among the many skillfully drawn pages, an amusing scene occurs when two minions ogle the hero's shield (see interior page below). As a bonus, Byrne also contributes an extra five pages dedicated to Cap's colleagues and neighbors. This is 8 of 15 Captain America issues by Byrne. /// Byrne gallery
