Captain America #223 |
Captain America v1 #223, 1978 - Originally a mis-attribution, John Byrne seems to claim credit for the cover pencils on his website recently. He mentions perhaps working with a provided sketch, which would explain why the layout and main figure are inconsistent with other works. The villain's stance and detailing on the train adhere more to his style. Making it worse is Ricardo Villamonte's heavy-handed inking. Byrne's later run on this series (#249-255) would be some of his finest bronze age works. Other artists in this comic include Sal Buscema, Mike Esposito and John Tartag. This is 1 of 16 Captain America issues by Byrne.

Gotta be Tom Palmer inks, too, judging from the scan (no I haven't looked it up! Yeah, I'm lazy...).
Twp other sources say the inker is Ricardo Villamonte or Gaspar Saladino.
Interesting... Saladino will be the letterer (legendary DC letterer who also did Marvel's 1970s splash pages). Villamonte's inks look just like Palmer's work over John Buscema in that Stern-Buscema-Palmer Avengers run during the mid to late-80s.
Great work, by the way! Love your comments on draftmanship, composition, and so on.
IT'S JOHN. He posted that he finally remembered that he actually drew it. It is on a Byrne Robotics thread.
The post has been changed, reflecting new information by the artist himself.
