Barry Windsor Smith |
Conan the Barbarian v1 #22, 1973 - The vigor and enthusiasm of Barry Smith's cover is evident, offsetting its some of its shortcomings (equine anatomy for one). The layout is a bit convoluted, but effective in style and approach. Inside, the artist's rudimentary sketches reveal his explorations prior to the series (see interior page below). Although the cover touts a new story, the issue actually contains the first reprinting of
Conan the Barbarian #1. Due to a missed deadline, "Shadow of the Vulture" would appear in the
following issue. Smith's sketches were later reprinted in black and white in
Savage Sword of Conan #7. This is number 20 of 22 Conan the Barbarian issues with Smith art and/or covers.
