Total War #1 - Wally Wood art + 1st Mars Patrol

Total War v1 #1 featuring M.A.R.S. Patrol, 1965 - The Marine Attack Rescue Service is a crack team of American soldiers deployed on especially dangerous missions. Of the four members, one is African-American and another Asian American. Interestingly, this diversity was not often seen in silver age war comics. Despite some stiff figure drawing, Wally Wood (and his assistants) maintain a good standard illustrating the team's first appearance and origin. Gold Key's imposed grid system is at times monotonous, even as the artist inserts a few large panels here and there. Some panels lack more detail than others, resulting in an adequate but not outstanding effort. The issue's painted front cover is repeated on the back as a pin-up. This is 1 of 2 Total War issues by Wood. /// key 1st appearance, 1st origin Mars Patrol, 1st issue
