Christmas Parade #8 |
(Walt Disney's) Christmas Parade v1 #1 / Dell Giant, 1949 - One hundred-plus pages of original stories, activities and games fill this giant
first issue. Though touted as a Christmas issue, only the Donald Duck feature has a holiday theme. Donald's nephews request a steam shovel from Santa, forcing him to solicit the help of Uncle Scrooge.
Carl Barks' opening splash shows an unusually realistic city construction site. His masterful pages use varying panel shapes and fun holiday accents to increase interest and spontaneity. The climax is a hilarious battle between Donald and Scrooge, bludgeoning each other using enormous steam shovels. Lesser known is Barks' one page tale of Donald seeking refuge from his noisy nephews. Other Disney stories include Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Dumbo, Bambi, Cinderella, Snow White, Flying Mouse, Pluto, Lil Bad Wolf and Cookieland. "Letter to Santa" was later reprinted in
Christmas Parade v2 #5. Cover by Waly Kelly. This is 1 of 5
