Fighting American v1 #1, 1954 - Captain America's creators Joe Simon and Jack Kirby revisit the patriotic theme by introducing Fighting American, a super-hero for the Cold War. Fighting American and his sidekick Speedboy make their first appearances fighting the expanding Communist menace. The artwork as a whole is Simon and Kirby at their most engaging. The pacing is frenetic and their layouts purposeful. Of the three lucidly drawn stories, only "Duel to the Finish Line" opens with a splash page (see inside page shown above). Most impressive is Simon and Kirby's cover, an explosive scene that works well despite the absence of negative space. Some stories in this issue were later reprinted in Fighting American v2 #1. This is 1 of 8 Fighting American issues by Kirby. /// key 1st appearance, 1st cover Fighting American, Speedboy, 1st issue- - - - - - - - - -
