Fighting American v1 #1, 1954 - Captain America's creators Joe Simon and Jack Kirby revisit the patriotic theme with Fighting American, a super-hero for the Cold War. Along with his sidekick Speedboy, they fight against the expanding Communist menace. The artwork as a whole is Simon & Kirby at their most engaging. The pacing is frenetic and their layouts purposeful. Of the three lucidly drawn stories, only "Duel to the Finish Line" opens with a splash page (see inside page shown above). Most impressive is Simon & Kirby's cover, an explosive scene that works well despite the absence of negative space. Some stories in this issue were later reprinted in Fighting American v2 #1. This is number 1 of 8 Fighting American issues with Kirby art and/or covers.
