Battle #64 - Jack Kirby art & cover

Battle #64, 1959 - On the tiny island of Quemoy, battle rages between Communist China and US forces. Jack Kirby's layouts are straightforward, but each panel pulses with activity. The destructive barrage also extends to the cover, where Kirby delivers a chaotic yet perfectly balanced design. Interestingly, the last panel on page 2 seems to have been redrawn, perhaps by the inker? Other artists in this issue include Carl Burgos, Jay Scott Pike, Paul Reinman and Joe Sinnott. This is number 1 of 7 Battle issues with Kirby art and/or covers. See today's posts or more Kirby or Battle issues.

The cover and interior inks are by Christopher Rule, who inked a lot of work by Kirby in this period. Rule was primarily a teen humor artist but inked a number of artists for Timely/Atlas.
I suspect that story was also scripted by Kirby.
