(Walt Disney's) Donald Duck v1 / Four Color v2 #223, 1949 - One of
Carl Barks' best known works, Donald Duck and his nephews go to Peru in search of inexplicably square eggs. Beautifully drawn, the artist captures the vast remoteness of the Andes. The high point of the story is a sequence of shrouded panels, leading to the characters' stunning discovery. Barks enlarges a panel to reveal an ancient Andean city. Comprised of square stones, the depth and perspective are impressively rendered. Though considered a classic, Barks' cover lacks the detail of the interior pages. His three single page works round out his contribution. This story was was later reprinted in
Donald Duck Adventures #3 and
