X-men v1 #61, 1969 - Taking to the skies, the Angel faces off against Sauron, a half-man/half pteradactyl with illusionary powers. The first several pages are appropriately spacious, including a double-page spread that recaps the previous issue within the villain's grotesque wingspan. Though the action scenes pulsate with excitement,
Neal Adams' best moments occur on pages 13-14. The interaction between characters shows an emotional and psychological depth reminiscent of Adams'
Ben Casey strips. Whether depicting realism or fantasy, Adams displays an uncommon brilliance. This story was later reprinted in
X-men Classics #2 and
