Rio Bravo / Four Color Comics v2 #1018 - Alex Toth art

Rio Bravo / Four Color Comics v2 #1018, 1959 - John Wayne, Dean Martin, Angie Dickenson and Ricky Nelson star in this Warner Brothers movie adaptation from the 1950s. Artist Alex Toth does an admirable job capturing the likenesses of most of the actors. His gritty approach to the drawings seem perfectly appropriate for a western saga, particularly the opening splash of a stagecoach's arrival. The artist's linework varies in thickness, infusing dimension and interest into character faces. The level of draftsmanship begins to diminish toward the end, with certain panels lacking much needed detail. Still, it's an effort not dissimilar from Toth's other film comics of the same period. A gallery of movie photos also appears on the inside front cover. This is number 1 of 1 Rio Bravo issues with Toth art and/or covers. See today's posts or more Toth or Rio Bravo issues.
