Captain Action #1 - Wally Wood art

Captain Action #1, 1968 - Based on the Ideal action figures, DC Comics creates this short-lived series featuring Captain Action and Action Boy. The actual toy allowed the hero to transform into different characters including Superman, Batman, Spider-man and the Lone Ranger. The comic omits this skill for obvious copyright infringement reasons. Wally Wood does a capable job translating the characters, beginning with this obligatory origin story. Full of large, roomy panels, the pages are appropriately bold and exciting (see interior page above). Some scenes are more detailed than others, particularly where machinery is involved. Of the two full splashes inside, the page depicting Captain Action jostling aside a surprised Superman is an artistic high point. Other artists in this issue include Irv Novick (cover). This is number 1 of 4 Captain Action issues with Wood art and/or covers. See today's posts or more Wood or Captain Action issues. See also this blog's Wood checklist.
