Flash #194 - Neal Adams cover

Neal Adams
The Flash v1 #194, 1970 - One of several Neal Adams covers for this series, this one has a strangely gothic quality to it. A man walks with an invisible bride to the wedding altar, where the devil waits to conduct the vows. The Flash stands agape at the bride but doesn't seem fazed standing next to Satan. Certainly one of the weirder covers of the bronze age, but no less interesting thanks to Adams. This is number 1 of 14 Flash issues with Adams art and/or covers.

Adv. of Bob Hope #107

  1. Flash's reaction is wonderfully effeminate. Didn't you previously rate this 4 stars?

  2. I did. I'm trying to be more discriminating with the higher ratings. Hopefully that means those issues that get them are truly the cream of the crop.

  3. I can understand not wanting to give out too many 5s, but there are also problems giving everything a middle-of-the-road rating. Another consideration, is this a 3 star cover by Neal Adams standards or any artist's standards? Sure- the ratings are for fun and this has always been a favorite blog.

  4. The ratings are relative to the artist's body of work. In this case, Adams meets expectations, but is not exceptional nor disappointing in relation to the whole (in my opinion). This issue was a tough call, teetering between 3 and 4 stars. Maybe I'll re-evaluate later. As always, your comments are appreciated.
