Hillbilly Comics v1 #1, 1955 - Popularized by Al Capp's Lil Abner, Charlton comics jumps on the bandwagon with this series on rural folk. Gumbo Galahad, Hillside Hilda and the McSleezy family are just some of the stereotyped (and often cringey) characters. Interestingly, the opening tale of this first issue coincides with the Davy Crockett craze of the 1950s. All stories were drawn by Art Gates. Cover by Gates.
