The World Around Us v1 #30 / Undersea Adventures, 1961 -
Jack Kirby depicts an undersea diving bell on the opening splash, introducing the book's theme. Simply drawn with minimal effort, the page is still far superior to his other single-pager on color and optics. Most fascinatingly, Kirby supplies seven text illustrations on a short story adaptation. Two are full pages and five are smaller and more intimate. All are drawn in a harsh, graphic style reminiscent of
German Expressionism. While not completely successful, Kirby gets credit for the bold attempt. Other artists in this issue include Angelo Torres and George Evans. This is 1 of 5
World Around Us issues by
Kirby.
