All-American Men of War v1 #67, 1959 - Assigned to provide cover for his buddies on the move, a young Gunner would rather be on the attack alongside them. His commanding officer Sarge keeps him in place, making full use of his accurate and tenacious firing. With limited interaction between them, Gunner and Sarge make their first appearances in this short story. Although their debut is sometimes credited to Our Fighting Forces #45, a comparison of the publishing dates shows this issue coming out two months earlier. This Robert Kanigher story was drawn by Irv Novick and later reprinted in DC 100 Page Super Spectacular #5. Other artists in this issue include Russ Heath.
