Mask Comics #1 - L.B. Cole cover + 1st issue

L.B. Cole
Mask Comics v1 #1, 1945 - Filled with mostly different genre stories, this golden age first issue features an astonishing cover by L. B. Cole. Collectors of this era have long sought his covers, often brightly and garishly colored. While not a huge fan myself, I acknowledge some of his covers are exceptional in both drawing and design. In this example, a grotesque face beckons an array of fairy-like creatures toward his candle-lit flame. The word "evil" is engraved on the holder's base. The metaphorical approach suggests horror, fantasy, mystery and something deeper psychologically. Other artists in this issue includes Maurice Gutwirth and Rudy Palais. /// key 1st issue, select L.B.
