Marvels v1 #1, 1994 - Through the lens of a Daily Bugle photographer, readers witness the birth of Marvel (then Timely) super-heroes beginning with the original Human Torch. Some of the key events and characters from the golden age are seen by the public for the first time, including Captain America and the Sub-Mariner. Kurt Busiek's terrific script is visualized by
Alex Ross, who paints every page using real life people as models. The medium allows for far greater modeling and detail. The result of this
first issue is something jarringly realistic while maintaining the believability of the genre. Ross ends the story with a double-page spread featuring almost all the Timely heroes of the 1940s. ///
