John Carter Warlord of Mars #1 - Gil Kane / Dave Cockrum art + 1st issue

John Carter Warlord of Mars #1
John Carter Warlord of Mars v1 #1, 1977 - Marvel begins its own version of the Edgar Rice Burroughs hero in this first issue. In the midst of a battle against four-armed warriors, a flashback sequence explains John Carter's origin. A confederate soldier fleeing a band of indians on horseback, he is suddenly transported to the red planet through unknown means. Often overlooked is the story's artwork, a superb effort by Gil Kane and Dave Cockrum. The layouts and pacing are precisely designed. Kane's often harsh pencils are softened by Cockrum's smooth delineations. Though different, the combination of these artists' styles mesh together beautifully.
