| Showcase #34 |
Showcase v1 #34, 1961 - Scientist Ray Palmer takes his class of students to an underground cavern for a field trip. While inside, a cave-in suddenly blocks their exit. Palmer uses his experimental lenses to reduce himself in size and look for a way out. Unfortunately, his shrinking method also results in the subject's explosion. In the second story, Palmer dons his colorful new costume for the first time, marking the first appearance of the silver age Atom. This Gardner Fox tale, drawn by Gil Kane, was later reprinted in 80 Page Giant #8, Secret Origins v2 #2, DC Special Blue Ribbon Digest #9 and Secret Origins of the Super DC Heroes. After two more appearances in Showcase, the hero next appears in his own self-titled series a year later. /// key 1st appearance, 1st cover, 1st origin Ray Palmer as the Atom- - - - - - - - - -
