Showcase v1 #6 presents Challengers of the Unknown, 1957 - A deep sea diver, an Olympic wrestler, a test pilot and a circus daredevil join forces and embark on their first adventure together. A mystic named Morelian asks the quartet open to an ancient box organized into four secret compartments.
Jack Kirby's cover is simplistic and inexplicably serene. His story art fares better with its action-packed sequences and large chapter panels. Like other science fiction tales of the era, an array of imaginative dangers challenge the protagonists. Kirby revels in his renditions of colossal warriors, energy-sapping suns and flying robotic weavers. The
Challengers of the Unknown would become one of Kirby's most enduring creations for DC. This story was later reprinted in
Secret Origins #1. This is 1 of 3
Showcase issues by
Kirby. The Challengers would later debut their own self-titled
series. ///
