New Gods v1 #2, 1971 - As Darkseid builds his underground infrastructure on Earth, Orion tries to quell the widespread panic caused by the Fear Machine. One of his most arresting Fourth World covers,
Jack Kirby lowers the masthead to make room for the villains while maximizing the layout. Inside, five splashes and a double-page spread demonstrate the artist's enthusiasm. Perhaps most memorable is the portrait of Mantis (see interior page below), one of Apokolips' most dangerous threats. Vince Colletta does an adequate job in inking Kirby's pencils, which remain largely intact. This story was later reprinted in
New Gods v2 #1. This is 2 of 11
