Sgt. Fury (and his Howling Commandos) v1 #1, 1963 - In the midst of a resurgence of superheroes, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby introduce Marvel's one and only war book of the silver age. Nick Fury makes his first appearance as the leader of a commando squad in World War II. Tasked with rescuing a resistance leader, Fury, Dum Dum Dugan, Rebel Ralston, Junior Juniper, Gabe Jones, Izzy Cohen and Dino Manelli parachute into France. Despite all the flurry, Kirby's cover is disappointingly static. His interiors, however, are dynamically drawn and include two splashes (including the page below) and a two-page spread introducing the commandos. This is 1 of 20 Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos by issues by Kirby. /// key 1st appearance, 1st cover Nick Fury, 1st issue
