Tales of the Mysterious Traveler v1 #4, 1957 - On
Steve Ditko's cover, a trenchcoat-clad host stands on a street corner while wafting pages cleverly display the issue's contents. His own face is enlarged in the background, adding both scale and interest. None of Ditko's inside tales quite match the level of craftsmanship, but are splendid in their own way. The way the narrator is inserted on every page make the stories feel more intimate and personal. "Operation Blacksnake" and the "The Desert" are especially noteworthy due to their innovative opening pages. The latter story was later reprinted in
Tales of the Mysterious Traveler #15 and all four were reprinted in
Haunted #49. This is 3 of 11
Tales of the Mysterious Traveler issues by
Ditko.
