Jim Starlin |
Avengers v1 #135, 1975 -
Jim Starlin's sharply designed cover portrays a battle between the Vision and Ultron-5. Detailed and textural, his effort is partially marred by the large imposing faces by John Romita. Thor, Iron Man and Mantis seem hastily added, perhaps to reinforce the idea of a "team" book. While Romita is a capable artist, having Starlin make the modifications would have been more consistent. Other artists in this issue include George Tuska and Frank Chiaramonte. This is 3 of 3

Romita did that a lot - you might remember the famous Starlin CAPTAIN MARVEL cover where Romita redrew Cap's face. It was a bizarre way to art direct some of those covers, although he claimed a lot of it was because of requests from Roy and Stan.
