Western Crime Busters #9 - Wally Wood art

Western Crime Busters v1 #9, 1952 - In these early Wally Wood tales, page layouts and figure drawings are clearly a struggle. On the other hand, his deft use of lighting is evident from the beginning. The heavily inked areas are generally proportionate to the lighter ones, maintaining balance and depth. Wood's rich handling of texture also appears in certain panels, most effectively on pages 5-6 of the first story and page 7 of the second. Note that this is the only issue of the series boasting two of his works. Other artists in this issue include H. C. Kiefer. This is number 3 of 4 Western Crime Busters issues with Wood art and/or covers. See today's posts or more Wood or Western Crime Busters issues. See also this blog's Wood checklist.
