Western Crime Busters #9 - Wally Wood art

Western Crime Busters v1 #9, 1952 - In these early Wallace Wood westerns, page layouts and figure drawings are clearly a struggle for the young artist. On the other hand, his deft use of light and shadow is evident from the beginning. The heavily inked areas are generally proportionate to the lighter areas, maintaining balance, depth and aesthetic interest. Wood's rich handling of texture and motion also appear in certain panels, most effectively on pages 5-6 of the first story (see scans below) and page 7 of the second. Overall, his artwork shows promise beyond the rough edges. Other artists in this issue include H. C. Kiefer and others. This is number 3 of 4 Western Crime Busters issues with Wood art and/or covers.
