Frontline Combat #3 - Wally Wood art
Frontline Combat #3, 1951 - Nazi general Erwin Rommel was a brilliant military strategist who outfoxed the British again and again in the deserts of North Africa. Wally Wood adeptly illustrates the story of his campaign, filling the panels with tanks, planes and other military machinery rather than emphasizing the arid environment. His sequence of same sized panels on page 6) corpses gives equal weight to a listing of many Nazi atrocities during the war. Like many of his EC efforts, the artist's level of detail surpasses that of most of his peers. In contrast to the other artists in the issue (Wood, Jack Davis and John Severin), Harvey Kurtzman's work is cartoonish by comparison but is compelling in its own unique way. This is number 3 of 13 Frontline Combat issues with Wood art and/or covers. See today's posts or more Wood or Frontline Combat issues. See also this blog's Wood checklist.
