Gunsmoke Western #36 - Al Williamson art

Gunsmoke Western #36, 1956 - Most of Al Williamson's 1950s work comprised of short stories such as this one. An outlaw enters a frontier town and the artist captures the mood perfectly. The large panel on the opening page is pure artistry with its detailed trees and rocks. The pacing is beautifully laid out. A panel of silhouetted figures builds to the climax, and only then is the outlaw's face revealed. This is a nice gem of a western tale. The issue also contains some nice early work by Gene Colan. This is number 3 of 5 Gunsmoke Western issues with Williamson art and/or covers. See today's posts or more Williamson or Gunsmoke Western issues. See also this blog's Williamson checklist.
