Spirit World #1 - Jack Kirby art, Neal Adams cover + 1st issue

Spirit World v1 #1 comic book magazine cover art by Neal Adams
Neal Adams
Spirit World v1 #1, 1971 - This first issue features a busy, magazine-like cover aimed at a slightly older readership. Neal Adams' painting tries a little too hard at emulating the format, sacrificing interest and vitality. Jack Kirby meets expectations with four superbly drawn stories, all printed as black and blue duotones. The artist uses photo montages to accompany the art on several pages, but with varying degrees of success. Among the many noteworthy pages, an especially gruesome splash of a female specter stands out in "The Screaming Woman" (page six). Interestingly, a second Spirit World issue was never published but a few stories eventually saw print in Weird Mystery Tales and Dark Mansion. Kirby did only one other issue in the same format, the equally impressive In the Days of the Mob. Other artists in this bronze age magazine include Sergio Aragones (inside back cover gag). This is 1 of 1 Spirit World issues by Kirby and 1 of 1 Spirit World issues by Adams. /// key 1st issue
