Astonishing Tales #1
Astonishing Tales v1 #1 featuring Ka-Zar and Dr. Doom, 1970 - A magazine article reveals the latest challenge for Kraven the Hunter, intent on capturing Ka-zar's Sabre-Tooth tiger. Jack Kirby begins with an impressive splash, but the artwork begins to diminish from there. Panels are hurriedly laid out and the pacing too quick. In the second story, Dr. Doom plans to create a destructive new creature. Wally Wood's detailed opening splash sets an ominous tone. Subsequent pages are drawn and composed with carefully consideration. Medieval castles, lunar landscapes and attractive women all benefit from Wood's skills. This story was later reprinted in the Marvel Comics Art of Wally Wood. This comic marks the first ongoing series for both Ka-zar and Dr. Doom. Note that Ka-Zar #1 came out the very same month, but as a reprint series. Cover by Marie Severin. This is 1 of 2 Astonishing Tales issues by Kirby and 1 of 4 Astonishing Tales issues by Wood. /// key 1st series Ka-zar, Dr. Doom begin, 1st issue

Roy Thomas confirmed that Wallace Wood wrote his Dr. Doom stories but Stan Lee asked Roy to touch up the dialogue a bit to give it the Marvel "ring." Roy was shocked and embarrassed when the book came out credited to him. It was no surprise Wood left not long after.
