Conan the Barbarian v1 #15, 1972 - Concluding the crossover saga of Elric of Melnibone, Conan and his newfound compatriot must contend with the arrival of the all-powerful Green Empress. Initially, a mediocre opening splash and subsequent smaller panels add little to Barry Smith's drawings. From there the story art progresses into more exciting and fantastical sequences. Close-ups of character faces (see interior page below) provide the most visual interest. Elric's magical departure on page 19 is outlined for effect but crudely rendered, contrasting against Smith's final splash page: a farewell scene that's sensitively drawn and emotively sublime. This story was later reprinted in Giant-size Conan #5.
