Shield #1 - Jim Steranko cover, Jack Kirby reprint

Nick Fury and his Agents of S.h.i.e.l.d. #1, 1973 - This short-lived reprint series contains Nick Fury tales from earlier Strange Tales issues. Jim Steranko, who drew many of this stories at the time, commemorates this first issue with a brand new cover. Fury dodges fire in an underwater attack scene, his gun pointing up toward the masthead. Unusually composed, his figure stretches out in all directions, dividing the layout into manageable quadrants. The interior reprint is thinly laid out by Jack Kirby, with Don Heck and Mike Esposito doing the finishes. Curiously, no Steranko art appears in this title until the third issue. This is number 1 of 2 Shield issues with Steranko art and/or covers (not including reprints). See today's posts or more SterankoNick Fury or Shield issues. I'm really impressed how much this reminds me of Gulacy! I always knew he was influenced by Steranko, but I had no idea how much! Great lost cover! Thanks!
