Doomsday Plus One v1 #1, 1975 - One of
John Byrne's earliest works is this sci-fi post-apocalyptic series. A team of astronauts returns to Earth after a nuclear war, not too dissimilarly from the
Planet of the Apes films. The large panels and free flowing layouts have the spontaneity and appeal of a budding young comic book artist. Page five (see interior page below) nicely captures the destruction and aftermath of war within only three concise panels. The full page splash of an attacking mammoth (page 13) is one of Byrne's most exciting scenes. His figure drawing overall is primitive, but hints at his future potential. This story was reprinted in

Wow, this looks really cool. I've never heard of these books. I'm going to have to hunt these issues down at this years ECCC.
