3. Strange Tales v1 #179 featuring Warlock, 1975 - Taken prisoner on the Death Ship, Warlock now awaits his fate at the hands of the Universal Church of Truth. Jim Starlin delivers another exceptional effort, starting with his breathtaking splash. The layouts are impeccable, varying in design at nearly every page turn. Even small panels are carefully executed and contribute to a cohesive whole. Starlin's pencils and inks are credited, but Steve Leialoha may have inked a few panels as well. Also noteworthy is the first appearance of Pip the Troll. This story was later reprinted in Warlock v2 #1 and Fantasy Masterpieces v2 #9. This is 2 of 4 Strange Tales issues by Starlin. /// key 1st appearance Pip the Troll / Top 10 Starlin comics / Starlin gallery

I just discovered this blog and it is a real treasure! The opening splash for Strange Tales #179 is the reason I first fell in love with comic art. I believe it is Starlin's finest moment. The rest of the issue is also graced by the artist at his peak. The level of care and detail is evident in every panel. There is an organic, flowing quality to this that seems to be missing from his current work. A real gem...
