Shock Suspenstories #13 - Frank Frazetta, Wally Wood art

Shock Suspenstories #13, 1954 - After pushing his girlfriend from atop a roller coaster, a man tries to blend into the crowd at a public beach. Frank Frazetta's opening scene shows the murderer crouched under the docks like an animal, contemplating his next move. Breathtakingly illustrated, the artist maintains a gritty, serious tone in his only solo story for EC. In Wally Wood's tale, racism festers in a suburban neighborhood, resulting in harassment and cross burnings. His artwork is also outstanding, focusing on character moods and interactions. Wood's delicate lines and harsh shadows give weight to the somber theme and plot. Other artists in this issue include Jack Kamen, Jack Davis and Reed Crandall. The interior page shown above is by Frazetta. This is number 12 of 14 Shock Suspenstories issues with Wood art and/or covers and number 1 of 1 Shock Suspenstories issues with Frazetta art and/or covers. Great drawings, clearly photoreferenced. Frank Frazetta and Al Williamson shot a lot of pix at Jones Beach in preparation for this story.
