Frank Frazetta |
Beware v2 #10, 1954 -
Frank Frazetta's pre-code horror cover is a standout, even during a comics era replete with shocking and gory images. Note how the layout leads the eye from the masthead to the open grave below in a subtle "Z" pattern. Every muscle, sinew, and bone is meticulously delineated. Their shredded clothing seems to waft eerily in the evening breeze. This truly terrifying scene is fully detailed, from the stunted trees in the background to the scattered pebbles on the ground. Frazetta also includes common horrific metaphors, from the oversized moon to bats flitting about. Sid Check's inks steadily enhance the pencils without upstaging them. Other artists in this issue include Jay Disbrow. This is 1 of 1
