Adventure Comics #425 - Alex Toth, Alex Nino art + 1st Captain Fear

Adventure Comics #425
Adventure Comics v1 #425, 1972 - Stealing a "hawkhorse" foal from Tibet, a greedy westerner uses her to win horse races in the US. Alex Toth opens with a disorienting view from below, introducing the main characters. His thick, graphic line drawings lack subtlety, but compensates with masterfully sequenced panels. Alex Nino introduces Captain Fear (his first appearance and origin), a native islander in the 1800s who commandeers a ship to fight the Spanish. Most pages are drawn in his sharp angular style, further simplified in several facial close-ups. His abstract style is jarring but tempered by attractively designed layouts. This issue also includes cover artwork by Gil Kane. Cover by Mike Kaluta. This is 1 of 6 Adventure Comics issues by Nino and 3 of 7 Adventure Comics issues by Toth. /// key 1st appearance, 1st origin Captain Fear / original Nino page / Toth gallery
