10. Conan the Barbarian v1 #24, 1973 - First appearing in the previous issue, Red Sonja convinces Conan to steal untold riches within a glittering bejeweled tower. "The Song of Red Sonja" marks her second appearance and first cover appearance. Barry Smith perfects a neoclassical style that had been emerging in the past few issues. Every page is breathtakingly detailed, from the chaotic tavern brawl on the cover to the two magnificent splash pages. Two single page interludes temper the story's pacing with their quiet narratives and open panels (pages 11,18). This work is not only Smith's finest to date, but one of the finest comics of the bronze age. Note that this issue is often mistaken as Red Sonja's first full appearance. Read my notes on Conan #23 on why this isn't the case. This story was reprinted in Marvel Treasury Edition #15 and Savage Sword of Conan #82. - - - - - - - - - -
